The Waldos

1971. Five students at San Rafael High School in California — they called themselves the Waldos — heard about an abandoned cannabis crop near Point Reyes. They agreed to meet at 4:20 PM by the Louis Pasteur statue to search for it. They never found the crop. But "420" became their code word, and through a connection to the Grateful Dead's circle, it went national. A failed treasure hunt created a global subculture.

April 20th

4/20 became the unofficial holiday — rallies, protests, celebrations in every major city. Colorado's legalization in 2012 turned it from counterculture to commerce. The date also carries darker weight: April 20 is Hitler's birthday, the date of the Columbine shooting, and the Deepwater Horizon explosion. The calendar doesn't curate. It just holds everything.

From Crime to Commerce

In 1971, possession could mean prison. By 2025, cannabis is a $30+ billion legal industry in the US alone. The transformation of 420 from criminal code to stock ticker symbol is one of the fastest cultural reversals in American history. States that imprisoned people for possession now tax the same product at 25%. The number didn't change. Everything around it did.
